We’ve celebrated 50 years : 1965 – 2015

Sydney Maritime Museum began life in 1965 with the wonderfully descriptive name – Lady Hopetoun & Port Jackson Marine Steam Museum.

‘LadyHopetoun’ the very first vessel in the Museum’s fleet and still the flagship; ‘Port Jackson’, Sydney Harbour; and ‘Marine Steam’, very much the emphasis in the early days and a tradition continued throughout 50 years of growth and change.

Change is inevitable over 50 years and the name of this unique volunteer-led organisation is now the Sydney Maritime Museum – Home of the Sydney Heritage Fleet.
